The Glass Delusion
20 May to 3 October 2010
‘The Glass Delusion’ was the name given in the late Middle Ages and Baroque times to a form of depression. Sufferers were obsessive, compulsive, driven by irrational fears, and imagined themselves to be made of glass, hence brittle and fragile. So pervasive was the condition that it entered world literature, philosophy and history.
Cervantes wrote the novel The Glass Licentiate, Descartes mentions it as a premise to his syllogism I think therefore I am, and Charles VI of France had iron ribs sewn into his clothes to protect himself from breaking. Victims allegedly travelled padded in straw and refused to sit down fearing their body weight would fracture their buttocks.
The syndrome evokes a psychological separation between reality and imagination, between a strength and a vulnerability that we all experience at times. Glass is a barrier, yet allows light to pass through it; it magnifies and shrinks; it can be delicate as well as deadly. Its attributes are appropriated in symbolic ways: the Glass Brain and the Glass Man; mirror image, alter ego, Doppelganger, and split personality all come to mind. More than any other material glass has the ability to combine opposites and it is this duality that is the inspiration for this exhibition.
Contemporary art, artifacts and scientific objects have been brought together to tell the story of human attempts to reconcile the physical and mental worlds. |

| Art In Action (Oxford) |
Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 July 2010
Art in Action is a festival of fine art and master craftsmanship where artists take the visitor on
a creative journey by demonstrating what they do, often from concept to completion.
Staged
in the grounds of Waterperry House, Oxfordshire, artists set up their studios each July in one
of many spacious marquees. They work in front of visitors, giving them the rare opportunity to
observe the creative process at first hand.
Art in Action 2010 will feature Tel Aviv glass artist Sarah Hornik, who combines her obsession with glass and colour to create beautiful lamp worked
beads.
In addition to seeing master craftsmen at work, visitors to Art in Action will can attend a the large selection of practical classes on
offer. There are opportunities for approximately 4000 visitors to take a class in a wide and
eclectic number of subjects, including a class run by the Guild of Glass Engravers.
A
number of classes can be booked in advance online (www.artinaction.org.uk), but demand is
high.
In addition, Art in Action offers fine music, performing artists and storytelling for children.
There are lectures organised by NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art
Societies) and visitors can take guided tours of the beautiful Waterperry gardens and the
exquisite frescoes on the walls of Waterperry House that were completed in 2006.
There is a wide range of refreshments: cream teas from the Pear Tree Restaurant, a
good selection of wines, champagne and Pimm’s served on the lawn in front of the house and
numerous organic and artisan food stalls throughout the site.
Art in Action is truly a
celebration of creativity as well as a great day out for families and art lovers. People come
year after year – often, they say, as much for the atmosphere as for the works on show.

Normally hidden in storage, this fabulous collection will be a must-see for any glass enthusiast.
Edinburgh & Glasgow
The Museum of Edinburgh is also planning to hold a series of glass lectures through the summer months. From late summer onwards Glasgow Museums will undertake guided tours of their glass collection on display at Kelvingrove and in store at their Resource Centre at Nitshill.
Autumn
Autumn heralds one of the most important events when a conference is being held at Edinburgh College of Art, 1–4 October. As well as a host of lectures by eminent speakers, the college is mounting an exhibition of glass by present members of the glass department, and there will be demonstrations of glass making and an area devoted to glass makers working throughout Scotland today.
Visit Scotland In 2010
Throughout 2010, the public will be encouraged to visit places associated with glass. Many of these are featured in a leaflet being published for the anniversary. Using this, one can visit makers around the country and also explore some of Scotland’s hidden gems, which often have surprising links with glass. Kinnoul Aisle in Perthshire is the place to see the tomb of the founder of the industry, Sir George Hay. Or go to Dumfries to see glasses used by Robert Burns. The glass trail takes you all over the country.

Glass Courses, Lectures & Workshops
| [Posted 1 July 2010] |
| A Master Class “The Perfect Vessel” by Karl Harron (Northern Ireland) |
22 to 16 September 2010
Form: “...by which shape is determined, as distinguished from the material of which it is composed, giving it individuality and a distinctive character”.
The aim of this 7-day Master Class is to achieve a “sublime form”. The process is to discard the superfluous and to identify and develop a personal concept. The result will be a form that is the simple expression of a complex thought and students will be encouraged to adopt a sculptural approach to their work - a search for form and push their glass in a new direction rather than master a technique.
In order to develop your aesthetic and conceptual perspective, while negotiating the technical challenges of deep-slumping into 3-step ceramic moulds, the beginning will be with pencil and paper, drawing from the immediate environmental stimuli surrounding The Glass Studio with mark-making realised through the application of accessory glasses such as frits, stringers, powders and confetti.
